There's no telling precisely what it is that draws a two-legged chihuahua to his feathered friend, but the two share an inseparable bond. And both have Alicia Williams to thank for their adorable friendship.
Williams, a client services receptionist at Duluth Animal Hospital, saved both from unpleasant situations, offering them happy homes and ultimately an unlikely animal partnership.
Penny, a white Silkie chicken, was rescued after having been used as a recipient for an experimental program.
“She was in a really bad situation. We in animal science (in college) visit all types of animal facilities, farms and things like that,” Williams tells the Gwinnett Daily Post. “She was an experimental chicken in the program and she had run the course of the experiment, so that was it for her." Rather than sit idly by, she says, she asked if she could take Penny home. They agreed.
Roo, Penny's two-legged chihuahua companion, was rescued from a ditch in the dead of winter at just 7 weeks old. He'd been born deformed, and Williams tells the Gwinnett Daily Post that she thinks he'd been abandoned by a backyard breeder who couldn't sell him with his deformity. Fitted with a custom wheelchair, Roo now has more than enough love to go around.
“Roo really benefited from being able to bond with something. He was able to attach himself to her,” Williams tells TODAY. “And Penny, she loves the companionship."
Sounds like these two, while no doubt an unlikely pair, are a perfect match.
