It all started with a candle.
Adrian Boone-Sierra of Las Vegas is only 8 years old, but he knew exactly what to do when a candle tipped over in his bedroom and quickly engulfed the space with flames on March 15.
His 3-year-old brother, Cameron, was fast sleep, so he grabbed his hand and quickly left the room before telling an adult what happened.
"I love my brother. I knew if I told [the adults] first instead of him, the flames would have reached him," he explained.
It turns out that Adrian not only did the right thing, but made the smart move by saving his brother and himself first. Because he was quick on his feet, his mother, aunt, and other people in the house were able to quickly escape the house without harm.
Unfortunately, Adrian and his family lost most of their possessions in the house because of the fire. It appears that only a couple of Harry Potter books remain in the kids' room. But there is a huge silver lining here!
Members of All Saints Day School — the elementary school that Adrian attends and at which his mother, Jasmine, teaches — came together as a community to gather supplies and overwhelming support for the Boone-Sierra family to rebuild.
Elizabeth Santa-Cruz, the director of the school, explained, "The next day, [Jasmine] came to work to see what she needed to do for her class. Of course we sent her back [home] and told her, 'Don't worry about work.'"
Not only did Adrian save his family, but he was awarded the Nevada Citizen of the Month!
