It's sad, but true fact – many, many hens around the world are bred for the sole purpose of laying eggs and once they aren't needed anymore they are murdered without hesitation or guilt.
The Animal Place is an amazing safe haven for animals in Upstate New York that is dedicated to the fair and just treatment of animals. Laying hens are generally too lean for human consumption and are usually slaughtered after they stop providing eggs.
When they caught wind that thousands of chickens were going to be mercilessly gassed and sent to a landfill in Northern California, they knew they had to step in, but it wouldn't be easy.Thanks to a $50,000 donation from an anonymous donor, 3,000 hens laid their last eggs and were flown to The Animal Place for retirement in a mission they called Operation Chicken Airlift.
Here are the chickens free for the very first time at the Woodstock farm, finally able to spread their wings and live out the rest of their lives happy.
