When a single father brought his 6-month-old baby girl into Ottawa Regional Hospital's emergency room, Dr. Eileen Couture could not believe it. The father claimed he saw worms and maggots in his daughter's hands. Upon close inspection, the father was not wrong. Dr. Eileen pulled out several maggots from the little girl's hand. The baby was fine and recovered quickly. The only trouble was, how the heck did those maggots get in there.
After 24 hours of testing, it was discovered that the cause were a few cow-loving horn flies. But that just posed another question: what was a baby doing around cows? It turned out the single father worked on a dairy. He didn't have anyone to care for his baby girl, so he would bring her to work with him. Too young to swat the flies away, they managed to lay eggs in the baby's hand. The strange incident was recreated for TLC's Untold Stories of the ER.
"It was one of my older cases of a 6-month-old baby whose father was caring for the child in a barn," Dr. Eileen told the Times. "The baby was brought to me suffering from worms and maggots and her medical treatment was recreated for the program."
The baby made a full recovery and needless to say, Dad stopped bringing her to the barn! What we can all learn from this father's story is that we should always be cautious about where we leave our children. What may seem totally safe at face value could be exactly that for an adult, but when it comes to our precious kids, taking a few extra moments to do a little research can be the difference between a trip to an emergency room and a good night's sleep!
