Baby Monkey Is Rescued After Losing His Mother To Poachers

Although langurs are not on the endangered species list, they are listed as "near threatened."

Thankfully, ordinary people — like these two brave men who freed a frightened cougar stuck in an animal trap — and animal rescue organizations are working to ensure the survival of creatures like Piak.

Piak is a spectacled langur, a small monkey, from Thailand. He and his mother had been living in the jungles of the Ranong province until his mother was tragically killed by poachers.

Fortunately for Piak, a local man heard that the poachers had kept the baby monkey and stepped in to rescue him.

The man called the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), an organization that takes in wild animals in need of rescuing. Although Piak was weak, he found his way into good hands in an intensive care unit.

Scroll through below for a look at Piak and his incredible rescue story.

Sadly, poaching in Thailand is still very common. Baby animals are often left behind after their mothers are taken away, and they're sometimes sold as exotic pets.

In addition to being hunted for food, spectacled langur monkeys are often put in danger due to humans encroaching on their habitats. This is common in Thailand, Myanmar, and Malaysia.

Their homes get torn down and sometimes they have run-ins with vehicles. Sadly, Piak's mother was a victim of poaching.

Piak was too young to be left on his own, but luckily, a hero stepped in and saved the day.

There was no way Piak could have survived had it not been for a caring local man that saved him from the poachers. The man reached out to the WFFT just in time.

The WFFT was founded in 2001 by Edwin Wiek. The center focuses on taking care of neglected animals that were in captivity due to the illegal wildlife trade. In its first year, the WFFT has nursed a neglected tiger back to health and saved over 20 primates.

Upon his arrival, Piak was very weak. The WFFT's Facebook page states that they are doing everything they can to get him strong and healthy again. Piak is currently in intensive care with the WFFT's veterinary team.

Piak is now one step closer to living the life he deserves. "We will do all we can to get him strong and healthy again," the WFFT said on Facebook.

Organizations like the WFFT are offering a glimmer of hope, as they try to get people to start taking responsibility for the damage they can do to wild animals' home environments.
