Every new parent likes to tell anyone who will listen what a "little genius" their child is, but when it comes to babies, I'm not so easily impressed.
Sure there are cases of unexplainable intelligence, like baby genius Elise Tan-Roberts, but these stories are few and far between. If you want to promote healthy, fast learning in a child, the key is to teach them yourself — and to start them out early.
Baby sign language is a relatively new phenomenon. Parents weren't teaching their newborns how to sign when I was a baby, and I didn't know about it until I recently started noticing books and DVDs on the subject. The idea is that you start to teach your babies simple signs like "eat" and "sleep" early on to make communication a little bit easier on both the baby and the parents during that first year.
In the video below, we learn how a new mother started teaching her three-month-old daughter, Malynn, to sign "up" by clamping her tiny hands together. Malynn's mom knew that babies don't usually start signing back until about six months, so you can imagine how shocked she was when Malynn signed that she wanted to get up from her baby swing only four days later.
Strangely enough, it almost sounds like she says "up" around 1:55, just like the time this newborn shocked the world when he said "hello."
I have to admit, Malynn is one newborn who definitely impressed me — and she's pretty cute, too!
