Homeless Woman Gets A Free Makeover Before Going To See Her Late Husband’s Grave

The Green Tangerine Salon located in Boston, MA, is as brightly colored an establishment as the name suggests, but it’s behind those spotless glass doors that the really dazzling thing happens.

Some women, like Melanie, don’t remember the last time she could bear to look at her own reflection. "It's tough," she says, and her smile is as strong as steel. "I live in a shelter."

Many of the patrons who flock here for the free service live in similar conditions. They're unable to pay for any kind of beauty products, so the fact that an established salon like this one is opening their doors to them means a lot.

"If your hair isn't right, I think your whole day isn't right," says another woman currently experiencing homelessness. Her left eye is dark with a bruise, and while she says it was from a fall, it’s her hair that really concerns her.

More and more, hairstylists are going above and beyond the call of their craft to serve those in need. Like this homeless man’s emotional reaction to seeing his hair cut for the first time in so long, and the diabetic homeless man who received a cut on the street, it’s uplifting stories like these that truly prove just how meaningful one small act of kindness can be.

I think most people can relate to all of this in some way. So much of our identities and confidence derive from how we present ourselves, and something as small as offering to cut a person’s hair for free could be life-changing.
