10 Things You Need To Know Before You Ever Visit A Makeup Counter Again

I have always loved going to beauty stores with my friends to try out new looks, maybe even getting one of the free makeovers they frequently offer at department-store cosmetic counters just for fun.

After working for one of those stores in college, however, I learned just how much is hiding behind those sparkly eyeshadows and lush lipsticks that most customers probably would never think about.

Obviously, there's the germ factor on all the test products, but do you know which item is the most notoriously grimy and should really never be tried on? I'm definitely feeling some residual regret after reading just what kind of bacteria I could have been swiping on when I was testing a shade!

That said, there are also a few nice secrets every savvy shopper should know. Take a look below and let us know in the comments if we missed any makeup-counter facts.

1. Never Use Test Lip Gloss

Nope, not even with your own disposable brush. Those shiny tubes of gloss are often the most contaminated items in the store.

Overall, one in five makeup testers contains a nasty combination of yeast, mold, and even fecal matter.

2. Makeovers Don't Have To Be On Your Face

You can ask the consultant for a color chart to use as a guide rather than applying the products directly to your face.

3. You Can Return More Products Than You Think

It's easy to think that you're stuck with a product once it's open, it even if you realize it wasn't exactly what you thought it would be. However, know that you can still get a refund on those items.

Of course, if you try returning a practically empty product just before their return-policy time is up, they will know you're abusing the system and remember when it comes to your future samples and gifts with purchase.

4. They Might Try To Make You Feel Insecure

Well, not all of them, but several commission-hungry clerks use the tactic of pointing out a customer's flaws (or inventing new ones) to convince the person that they absolutely need a pricey product.

5. Makeovers Aren't Really Free

For the store, that is. There is obviously a monetary value on every item they use to help you try out a new look, and many of the experts rely on a commission for their paycheck. So be sure you're willing to buy at least one of the products before asking for the makeover.

6. They Know How To Weed Out The Penny-Pinchers

When a consultant asks you about the products you use on a regular basis, they're getting a sense of how much time they should spend with you on top of what items they would recommend.

If you're someone who relies solely on drugstore brands, they might not invest as much time on you as they would on a customer who's ready to splurge more — or maybe they'll just work even harder to get you to upgrade to a fancier product.

7. Some "Experts" Don't Know What They're Talking About

This is something I'll admit to doing when I worked at a beauty shop: I would have a general idea of what one of my more knowledgable co-workers would suggest and wing it while talking to a customer myself.

While I tried not to go too far overboard or would ultimately direct them to a better source, some consultants might be in over their heads. Just remember to double check through your own research before believing everything they tell you at the store.

8. They Know If You're Just In It For The Freebies

One of my best friends swears she has never bought foundation in her life: she simply relies on the gift with purchases that come from the other (cheaper) items from her favorite brand. She also pays close attention to the weekly sale ads.

This is a smart strategy for budget-conscious folks, but don't think you're pulling a fast one on the people standing behind the counter.

9. Pricey Products Are Kept At Eye Level

Brands shell out dough to get their items in the primo spot as the first thing a customer sees, but you'll find better deals by scanning the lower shelves.

10. You Should Save The Samples For Travel

You'll never have to worry about your makeup bag getting tossed out of the security-check gate thanks to the petite product samples you're offered. Because of their small size, they'll keep you from getting flagged or having to pour the messy liquid into a travel-friendly container.
