Ellen DeGeneres loves giving back, so when she found out a member of her audience stopped by her show with his wife weeks before deploying to Afghanistan, she wanted to give the couple a life-changing surprise.
When she brought Ryan and Crystal down to take a photo during the commercial break, they had no idea that the talk show host had intentionally picked them out to share their story. Once back on the air, DeGeneres had the couple sit down as guests to talk about their time in the army, bravely serving the country.
During the interview, Ryan, who had already served three tours in Iraq, revealed that he was heading back to Afghanistan for the next 12 months. Even though he knew his patriotic duty, he tears up when he talks about having to leave his wife and two kids alone.
DeGeneres, who previously rewarded a Navy veteran for saving an old woman's life, finally reveals the real reason she brought them on stage.
The comedian surprises the two deserving audience members with one of the biggest surprises yet: a $100,000 home makeover from HGTV'd! The couple's reaction to the generous gift made it all worth it.
"We planned this because we thought this was pretty special that right before you go to Afghanistan, you'd want to spend time with us," DeGeneres said.
