Mother And Daughter Transform Old Dresser Into A Patriotic Statement Piece

Sometimes an idea just leaps out at you, even if you weren't looking for it in the first place!

That's the kind of magic that happened to Shannon and Shelby, the mother-daughter crafts and design team behind Three Crazy Crows. They were browsing a rummage sale when an old, fairly unremarkable dresser suddenly stood out to them.

The dresser was probably seen by countless people that day, but it really takes a creative's eye to see the potential, and imagine what it could be rather than simply what it is.

Dressers are also great material for makeovers because you can do so much with them, from a simple paint update to a detailed and clever homage.

The dresser in question had a wavy design to its drawers, and that made Shannon and Shelby think of one thing: a flag billowing in the breeze!

So they picked up the dresser, took it home, and transformed it into a quirky but beautiful statement piece based on Old Glory. And it's really charming!

This was what the dresser looked like when they started. Here, they've already removed the hardware and sanded it down to prepare it for painting.

It's plain, but you can see where they got the inspiration to make a flag in the wavy drawers.

Of course, the American flag is pretty precise, and that meant a lot of measuring to get the proportions right and the lines straight and even.

Painter's tape was used to ensure crisp, clean lines.

The top two left-hand drawers include the blue area (it's called a canton), while the rest have red and white stripes.

And while the measuring and taping was a chore, the payoff was pretty satisfying.

The supports were also painted accordingly, so everything would blend together when the drawers were put back in.

When the painting was complete, the whole thing was stained to give it a soft, rustic look. The handles blend in nicely, too, and aren't too distracting.

And as you can see, they went with the original 1776 version of the U.S. flag, with its circle of 13 stars to represent the original 13 states.

The stars were made with the help of a stencil.

What's more, Shannon and Shelby didn't keep this dresser.

Instead, they donated it to a local veterans' establishment so their space could have some patriotic pizzazz.

It's really a great way to bring out a unique feature in the dresser!
