Every athlete has their favorite adrenaline rush. While some live wildly cruising down powdery, steep, snow-capped mountains, others fantasize about catching that perfect wave. Then there is Chuck Patterson, a dare-devil who wants it all and figured out how to do both… at the same time.
Big wave surfing is a life and death situation, but to be the first person to ski down a massive, mind-numbing wave is a whole other level. This is not water skiing – think bigger and way more badass! Chuck Patterson is a former professional free-skier and took it to the ocean… with skis, poles, boots, bindings and of course, a helmet. This video was filmed for German sportswear brand Bogner at Jaws, a famous big wave surf break on Maui's north shore. I can not believe this incredible footage, but Patterson ensures its authenticity. His skis were specially designed to glide over water, instead of ice. To me, it is mind-blowing, but also a sprain or twist waiting to happen.
