The Pet Collective has brought us so many of our favorite stories of pet adoptions, and Kanga's was too inspiring not to share.
Volunteers who cared for Kanga said that he was found near Long Beach in a field. Not only did they quickly realize that he was blind, but he has congenital defects in his front paws that make it difficult — though not impossible — for Kanga to walk like a normal dog. Volunteers theorize that his original owner had the very best of intentions, but that ultimately his disabilities proved too hard to care for.
It took the better part of a year for Kanga to be paired with his forever home, but his current owner John says that they shared an instant connect upon meeting. "At first he bumped around would react like a normal dog who has sight," he tells the Pet Collective, adding that within a few days Kanga was well-enough acquainted with the space that he was navigating around with no issue. Kanga also gets some help from John's other dog, who helps guide him through spaces with the sound of her footsteps.
"It takes a little bit of extra work as opposed to adopting a seeing dog," says John. "But it gives me such pleasure in seeing him kind of find his way around my house."
