In August 2017, Theresa Norris and her mom walked into a Phoenix bridal shop because Theresa needed some alterations on her wedding gown. She had about a year to go until the big day but was hoping some simple adjustments could be made, like adding a bustle and lowering the neckline.
But rather than receiving support and enjoying the experience with her mother, Theresa was stunned when the staff kept insisting the dress was simply much too small for her to wear.
At the store, the dress wouldn't zip all the way up. Theresa admitted she'd gained a few pounds since purchasing the dress at another store — but not enough to the point the staff couldn't eyeball an estimate.
Theresa claimed the staff continued to point out her weight in front of other customers. Not only that, but she was refused any estimates or alterations!
Basically, the bride-to-be said the entire experience of being fat-shamed was one big embarrassment on a day that should have been special. She left the store in tears and eventually found another bridal shop who treated her with respect.
Months passed, Theresa's wedding happened, and she looked absolutely gorgeous in her dress. It fit her like a glove.
Then, one day, she was scrolling through Facebook when an ad popped up on her feed — for the same store who shamed her. She was reluctant, but decided to leave an honest comment about her experience there.
But the store only denied the claims. And several weeks later, someone behind the shop's Facebook account left a comment on Theresa's post — with nothing except a single link to another website. When Theresa clicked on it, she was stunned and appalled. Talk about doubling down!
