He Buries An Orange In Soot, But The Reason? Quick, Easy, And Surprisingly Delicious!

I come from a big hiking and camping family. I grew up a quick drive from Palo Duro Canyon in Texas. Most weekends were spent exploring different trails and then sleeping under the stars. Even now, as an adult, I'm always on the lookout for opportunities to escape the city with my backpack and just the basic necessities.

My family's campsite cuisine was nothing that would win a cooking competition. It was the usual fare: hot dogs, s'mores, maybe a can of beans. If we were feeling ultra "fancy," we'd fry up a fish that we'd caught.

Never could I imagine baking a cake while camping. Granted, I can hardly imagine baking a cake as it is — I'm no pro in the kitchen — but I recently saw a YouTube video describing a campsite cake recipe that's so simple that even I could do it.

First, pre-prepare your batter by combining the following:

  • 3.4 oz sugar
  • 1.6 oz flour
  • 1 oz cocoa
  • 1 egg
  • 1 oz olive oil or butter

Mix these ingredients together and carry them with you in a Tupperware container. You’ll also want to bring an orange and some toothpicks.

Once you get to the campsite, go ahead and cut the orange in half and remove the fruit from within. The orange peel itself becomes the bowl.

We've started the below video part of the way through, when the host gets to the baking portion of the instructions. Please SHARE if you love easy ways to cook like this!
