Former Hillsong Church pastor Carl Lentz found himself in hot water in 2020 when news that he had cheated on his wife came out. He ultimately lost his job at the megachurch, and somehow he and his wife were able to salvage their relationship amid the fallout.
Now both Carl and Laura Lentz are speaking out about not just one but two affairs in a docuseries based on reporting at the time. The Secrets of Hillsong will debut on FX.
The pair speak at length about their decision to get married in their early 20s and about Carl's rapid rise to celebrity status. He says, "The level of pressure, the level of responsibility was so huge, so quick. If you have issues in your life, influence, power and position will exacerbate all of them."
In 2020, a woman named Ranin Karim confirmed that she and Carl had an affair. Carl says that the toughest part of that time period was knowing how hurt his wife was. As he puts it, "I just remember feeling like am I in an alternate universe right now? The hardest part of this was trying not to look my wife in the eye, ever."

Carl also recalls the day he told Laura he'd been cheating. As he says, "There are some things you can recover from and there are other things I'll never recover from. The sound of her voice, the cry she had was like no other cry I've ever heard. Nobody should go through that, especially a wife that is flawless in character."
However, Carl's affair was not the only time he had cheated on his wife. He also had an affair with their nanny, Leona Kimes.
