The average teenage girl has years before she has to start worrying about motherhood and her biological clock.
Kayla Jones didn't have that luxury. She was just 17 when doctors told her she might lose the ability to carry a baby without a surrogate.
Kayla was just a kid herself when doctors discovered a massive tumor in her womb. They believed it was likely cancerous and had to act fast. In order to remove the tumor, they also had to remove the young woman's uterus.
Ultimately, the tumor was not cancerous. Still, for Kayla, it meant that she had to start thinking seriously about her future family planning at an age when most girls are thinking about prom dates and graduation.
She had to accept that, without a uterus, she would never carry a child.
Years later, happily married to Cody, her husband of four years, Kayla is at a point in her life where she's ready to have kids.
She may not be able to carry a baby herself, but — thanks to the precedent set by other young women — she has a perfect surrogate ready and willing to carry Baby Jones: her mother-in-law!
Kayla Jones was just 17 years old when she had to face some truly intimidating questions about fertility and motherhood.
She had a mass in her uterus that doctors believed was cancerous. They had to act fast to remove it, and she lost her womb as a result.
That meant she would never be able to bear her own children.
The silver lining? They were able to leave her ovaries, so she could still one day have a biological child.
As a young adult, Kayla met her future husband, Cody. The young couple got married and enjoyed a happy few years of newlywed bliss.
Still, after four years of marriage, both Cody and Kayla were ready for the next step: kids!
They knew from the get-go that they would need a little assistance from science to have their baby, and they would need a surrogate as well.
Fortunately, Kayla and Cody already had an awesome candidate in mind.
Cody's mom, Patty Resecker, hadn't yet hit menopause.
She happily volunteered to be the "oven" for her grandbaby!
As Kayla explains in a post on their Facebook page, Creating Baby Jones, "A surrogate mother is a carrier of a child for another couple. There are two types of surrogates; traditional and gestational. During a traditional, the surrogate uses her own egg to create the baby. A gestational surrogate is not genetically related to the baby she is growing. She's just the oven."
Patty is somewhere in between, because the baby will be made using Kayla and Cody's genetic material, but of course, Patty will be related to the baby too!
Patty is 49, and her last pregnancy was twenty years ago.
Still, she's super-enthusiastic and excited about the idea of helping her little grandbaby enter the world.
Both she and Kayla have been on all sorts of medical treatments to make sure the pregnancy is a success.
Kayla went through an IVF procedure where her eggs were harvested in order to create embryos.
Meanwhile, Patty is on medication to help improve her fertility and encourage the embryo to implant.
Kayla's eggs were harvested back in January 2017.
At the time, she wrote that doctors were able to remove 12 eggs, which were then fertilized and frozen.
From there, they needed to wait a little while to make sure that the bun and the oven were both ready for the next step!
In early March, the family was ready to take their next big step! Patty went in to have the eggs implanted by the fertility specialist.
It will be a little while before they learn for sure if the fertilized egg has "taken."
In the meantime, Patty, Kayla, and Cody are all praying for this much-wanted little one to make a grand entrance.
Kayla wrote online, "Praying this sweet baby sticks and gets comfortable in there."
