I don't think there's any force more powerful than a mother's natural instincts.
It's certainly true for humans, and I think that the same can be said for our animal friends as well. You'd think that mothers of a certain species would reject babies of a completely different animal, but we've seen animals nurse baby animals of different species. For example, I've seen a Boston terrier who used to be terrified of cats come to the aid of several starving kittens by nursing them.
Somehow her maternal instincts set in and she knew that she needed to save those babies.
We've also seen female animals adopt other babies as if they were their own, like this German shepherd who treats an adopted puppy as her own.
Recently, in Utah, the miracle of motherhood made itself known again when four newborn puppies desperately needed a mother to nurse them.

It started when a woman found this sealed box on her car. It had probably been there for hours and said, "Free. Mama past away. Born on Friday." [sic]
She opened it up and found four very tiny Chihauhau puppies. She immediately raced them to an animal shelter. She had no idea how long they had been there, but if she had waited much longer, they would have starved as they badly needed food.
Merely by a stroke of luck, the shelter had received a cat earlier that week who had just given birth and was lactating — Kit. Miraculously, she allowed the puppies to nurse, too.
Not only did Kit nurse them, she has been serving as their surrogate mother. The pups have moved on to bottle nursing now, and rescuers are seeking a forever home.
Kit's patience and loving nature will hopefully find her a forever home as well.
Something similar happened when a Pit bull mix named Pittie was found abandoned with a tiny kitten named Kitty.
Pittie loved Kitty with everything she had and nursed Kitty to health.
Even when the cat began to bottle feed, Pittie wanted to help out however she could.
