Pregnant Mother Cat Travels Two States To Save Her Six Babies From A High-Kill Shelter

Being pregnant isn't easy.

It's harder to move, you're always hungry, and you get tired very easily — just ask this mom who filmed her pregnant belly moving like an alien.

Now imagine how much worse it all gets when you're carrying six babies instead of just one!

That's the exact situation of Nala, a 2-year-old stray cat who recently endured an incredibly long trip just to make sure her babies were born somewhere safe.

There are thousands of cats in shelters all across the country, but most people want to adopt a very young cat that's still tiny and cute. But what about an adult cat with a belly full of four to six kittens that will also have to be cared for? Those almost never get adopted, and often get put to sleep.

Fortunately, volunteers at the Here Kitty Kitty Rescue knew that something had to be done to save Nala and her unborn babies.

When rescuers discovered Nala, she was living at a high-kill shelter.

Worried that she would be put down because she was heavy with kittens, they formulated a plan to get Nala somewhere safe — but their plan would involve traveling two entire states with the very-pregnant cat.

"She was very pregnant and no one any closer would help her. A transport chain was arranged to get Nala to (Here Kitty Kitty Rescue in) Indiana.

"Our biggest concern was that Nala would go into labor during the long trip!" Jennifer Adams Gillispie of Here Kitty Kitty Rescue told Love Meow.

Jennifer continued: "One morning, we went to run errands. We were only gone 2 hours and came home and found Nala had had 6 kittens.

"They were all very tiny, especially the only girl. The little girl only weighed 2 1/2 oz. Nala had 3 buff kittens and 3 orange kittens."

According to volunteers at Here Kitty Kitty, they are small because Nala probably did not have much food to eat before she was rescued.

Volunteers watched the babies very closely the first few days, weighing them every day.

Much to everyone's relief, all six kittens are nursing constantly and steadily gaining weight!
