Woman Finally Has Her Son Home Four Years After She Adopted Him

If you're not entirely familiar with the adoption process, your basic knowledge of it is probably that it takes a while. People don't wake up thinking of adopting a baby and come home with the baby later that day. Or even later that week. It can take well over a year to get a child through adoption.

One Kansas mother knew all of this and more, after going through the whole process firsthand. However, she never expected to meet her son in 2012 and then not have him come live with her until 2016.

Thalia Jeffres went to meet her son Changa Changa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but learned that she could not take him home as soon as she'd been led to believe. There were hundreds of children waiting on exit permits, and her son was one of them. The process was not one quickly resolved, in fact Changa Changa stayed there until April 2016.

Jeffres had chosen to adopt from the Congo, as she had been following the political unrest in the area since the fall of President Mobutu Sese Seko in 1997. However, it was that exact unrest and delays by the U.S. State Department that led to Changa Changa spending several years without her.

After being treated for malaria, Changa Changa is now reunited with his mother and forming a positive routine. You can see the mother and her quiet, but diligent son in the video below. We hope Changa Changa's official adoption day was as happy little Danielle's Koning's!
