Laurilin Celadilla Marte and her husband, Marino Abel Camacho, knew they were going to have twins. However, when Laurilin gave birth, they were surprised to see that their daughters, Ballanie and Bellanie, were conjoined twins.
The siblings were connected at the lower back. They shared parts of their spinal cord, bladder, and reproductive system.
The family is from the Dominican Republic and doctors there were not equipped to handle the twins' health needs. Laurilin and Marino reached out to family and friends for help and they were finally connected with specialists in New York.
They flew to New York to meet with a surgical team at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital.
"As a mother, we love our children no matter how they are," Laurilin said. "But it was difficult because their condition was not normal."
Doctors believed they could separate the twin girls, but it would be the first conjoined twin separation at Maria Fareri. When they were 11 months old, Bellanie and Ballanie underwent an intense, 21-hour surgery that required over 50 doctors, nurses, and medical staff.
Eventually, the girls were rolled out on adorable red wagons after their successful surgery.
"I knew it was going to be OK because we were given this opportunity to have this dream realized here," Laurilin said. "Our family does not know how we can repay everyone with the happiness we've been given."
Bellanie and Ballanie still have a long road ahead of them. The babies will require physical therapy and will have to deal with a few health issues, but they are otherwise happy now.
