As every parent knows, the first way their young toddlers will choose to investigate any new item they find is by popping it right into their mouth. I had no idea how common this was until my nephew started doing the exact same thing! Books, empty water bottles, and your cell phone if you aren't careful — he will do his darnedest to cover the whole thing is as much slobber as possible. And, of course, there's plenty of slobber to spare when it comes to these silly cuties.
However, that can also lead to some dangerous situations when they come across something little enough to lodge into their tiny throats. That's why it's so important to keep a close eye out for hazardous items lurking in your home. Boston mom Juana Martinez learned that the hard way when her 16-month-old son, Lucas, happened to find a couple pennies lying on the floor one day.
She thought her little guy was fast asleep when she heard his distress. She wasn't sure what happened, but she knew he was choking and unable to breath as his face turned a scary shade of purple. After quickly making the call to 911, Officer Chad Collins arrived on the scene and began administering emergency procedures. By thumping on the Lucas' back, he was able to successfully knock out not one but two pennies the youngster managed to swallow.
