Police officers who are killed in the line of duty are absolute heroes.
Much like the many military men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice, these officers deserve our undying respect and gratitude for giving their lives to keep us and our families safe from harm.
We sometimes forget, however, that they leave behind families of their own. So when I saw this heartwarming story of what the officers of one police department did for the daughter of one of their fallen colleagues, I was completely moved to tears.
Jewel Warren is an 8-year-old girl whose father was shot and killed while performing his job as a member of the Memphis Police Department back in 2011. So when Jewel recently received an invitation to attend a father-daughter dance, she naturally became very upset.
Thankfully, the members of the Memphis Police Department stepped up and did something absolutely incredible.
This touching story just goes to prove the huge difference we can make in the lives of others and how important it is to take care of the families of fallen heroes.

"In July of 2011, one of Memphis' Finest, Officer Tim Warren, was shot and killed in the line of duty while assisting with a domestic situation in the downtown area," the Memphis Police Department posted on Facebook. "His family and fellow officers will never forget his ultimate sacrifice."
The post continued, "Officer Warren's daughter received an invitation to attend a father-daughter dance at her school. Saddened by the letter, she was at a loss." In response to the invitation, Jewel's mother reached out to see if any officers were willing to donate their time and escort Warren's daughter to her father-daughter dance.
That was when Jewel received thrilling news: she would have not one, but six officers to accompany her to the dance! One of the policemen, Officer Amen, said, "We know we cannot replace Tim, but we can be there for his family when we are needed. It was truly an honor."
Even the rest of the community pitched in, with flower shops donating boutonnieres and long-stem roses and a photographer named Amanda Swain donating her time.
Officer Amen's wife, Taylor, told Yahoo Parenting, "Jewel had so much fun, but as the officers started coming out of the dance, I noticed the smiles on their faces. I think they had more fun."
Another of the policemen, Officer Pfeil, said, "It was an honor to be able to attend this event and to help keep Tim's memory alive."
Jewel may not have been able to dance with her father, but she certainly felt the outpouring of love from the Memphis Police Department and her community.
These officers and community members truly went above and beyond to give Jewel the special and magical evening she deserved. Their open hearts and generosity of spirit are an inspiration to us all.
