Corduroy, The World’s Oldest Cat, Imparts Tips For A Long And Healthy Life

They say age is just a state of mind, and here to prove that theory right is a truly impressive gentleman. He's a world-record holder, and an inspiration to anyone who might be feeling anxious about getting older. And he's only 26 years old.

Of course, 26 translates to 121 in cat years — because this world-record holder happens to be a cat (a Maine Coon, to be exact)! His name is Corduroy, and he's not slowing down anytime soon.

Corduroy was born in central Oregon on August 1, 1989. He was adopted from a shelter by a family with a 7-year-old daughter, Reed, and Reed is still happy to be Corduroy's human today.

Dogs get all the credit for being loyal, affectionate, and loving (and they are!), but cats are really just as deserving of it, even if they can be a little aloof at times.

But cat people know that with a little love, cats can be warm and wonderful companions, just like this dedicated kitty proves.

If you're reading this, you're probably not a cat, but you can still take some inspiration from this handsome fellow, who knows that age is meaningless when it comes to leading a full and happy life.

Despite his age, which is the equivalent of 121 in human years, Corduroy is still active, jumping up onto countertops and spending plenty of time outdoors hunting wildlife.

Reed believes that this active lifestyle, as well as never being declawed, is the reason behind Corduroy's impressively long life.

"He was able to defend himself and exercise his body and mind by hunting," Reed says. "Corduroy still catches critters but is not as good as he once was, thankfully," she adds.

And of course, plenty of love and affection is also probably a big factor in a long, healthy life.

Corduroy is on a special low-protein diet for his kidneys, but other than that, his life is all exploring, cuddling, and basking in the sun.

And, of course, getting up to classic cat activities like sitting on whatever you're trying to read.

It's a pretty nice way to spend a long life.

Reed describes Corduroy as mellow and easygoing, and says he enjoys spending time with people. He's also patient with children.

"It is an honor to have Corduroy in our life," Reed says. "I honestly don't remember much of my life without him. He is a wonderful companion and I hope to give him a happy and healthy life for many more years."

The longest life ever recorded for a cat was a staggering 38 years, so based on Corduroy's health, he has many more years to look forward to!
