There's no way you could possibly know it. There's no way you can even see it. However, thieves have come up with a credit card scam that hides right in plain sight. In a single instant, they can steal hundreds or thousands of dollars from credit card holders without them even knowing it. Police say criminals are now using credit card "skimmers." They can easily be installed in any card-reading device, and have been found at ATMs, gas stations, and even Walmart.
The skimmers are fake card readers hidden inside the existing reader. Nothing looks suspicious, so when you place your card in to make a purchase, what you don't know is they are capturing your pin.
"It's really hard to notice unless you know exactly what to look for," said Detective Dennis Reaser told KSHB. "So when you slide your card, it's going through the bad guys' skimming device and the card reader, which is why it works."
The government has even set up a federal task force to stop the growing crime tactic around the country. So how can you spot a credit card skimmer? Pull on the card reader. If it has been meddled with, it will easily pop out. You can cover the keypad with your hands in case there's a hidden camera attempting to capture your pin, and always check your bank statement after making a purchase.
