Deaf White House Receptionist Gives Tour Of The West Wing In Sign Language

From world leaders to staff members to regular (and awesome) people like you and me, everyone visiting the White House must first be met by its receptionist.

Her name is Leah Katz-Hernandez, and at only 28 years old, she’s already making history because she's deaf.

She was initially a White House intern before assuming her role as a receptionist. And from the looks of this video? It’s clear Katz-Hernandez knows her stuff!

We’re taken on a brief tour through the West Wing with numerous little nuggets of super-interesting details about the construction, maintenance, and storied history beyond those illustrious walls.

It’s truly invaluable that a video like this was put together. Not only does it showcase Katz-Hernandez’s immense talent, but it disproves stereotypes and challenges us to really listen (or rather, read!) when stories like this are told. Deaf Perception served a similar purpose when deaf twins reenacted what they face every day.

When we hear or read about these stories — particularly the one where a teen communicated with a deaf customer — we’re bringing much-needed visibility to a very important subject. In the past, it was unfortunately rare to read about or hear from those who are marginalized in our society, but that’s thankfully changing.

Not only that, but I also learned a lot about our capital’s history in just under five minutes. Katz-Hernandez is doing a wonderful job!
