Summer is a great opportunity to whip out the craft box and get going on some neat improvements to your home with affordable DIY projects. The best part? Most of them are simple enough that you probably have a ton of the needed materials already laying around your home. PBS has a good upcycle hack for those on used milk cartons that's a fun project for kids and adults alike: homemade outdoor bird feeders for your feathered friends.
Supplies:
- Empty milk carton
- A paint color of your choosing
- Paintbrush
- String
- Permanent marker
- Birdseed
- Small twig
First, you’ll need to cover the empty milk carton in the shade of paint you picked (two coats may be required if the paint is thinner). Then, cut a square hole toward the top of the carton (large enough for a small bird but small enough to keep out the larger critters). Next, gift your feeder some flair; draw on designs with your permanent marker once the paint has dried (PBS gave their bird feeder some roof shingles and window trim). Make two holes in the top to loop your string through. Then simply fill your new home with birdseed, poke the twig through, and you’re good to go!
