Father-Son Dream Boat Is Nine Years In The Making

Long-term projects of any nature can test our patience.

When Imgur DIY-er cak335 was in middle school, he saved up his allowance, eyeing plans to build his very own electric driver boat.

Eventually, he accumulated sufficient funds to buy designs for his dream boat. That was back in 2007.

For the next four years, this DIY-er and his father cut, weatherproofed, and stitched together all of the pieces for this boat.

By 2011, after years of hard work, including tirelessly building out of a friend-of-a-friend's tiny one-car garage for a full winter, they were sure their project was nearly finished.

But, of course, once we make plans, life tends to find a way to muddy them up. This DIY-er graduated from high school, left for college, and his parents ended up moving to a new state.

His boat project was officially on hold, until the summer of 2014. By 2015, thanks to another year of diligent work, this DIY-er's boat has finally been able to hit the high seas.

Keep scrolling through our gallery to learn how this DIY-er and his family built a gorgeous electric driver boat, and let us know what you think in the comments!

When Imgur DIY-er cak335 was a middle schooler, he dreamed of one day building his own electric driver boat.

Determined to turn that dream into a reality, he started saving his allowance.

Slowly but surely, by 2007, he saved up enough cash to buy designs detailing how to build his dream boat.

Designs in hand, he and his dad set off on their boat-building quest.

First, these two DIY-ers cut all the pieces for the boat out of plywood.

To weatherproof and marineproof the wood, they covered each piece in epoxy.

The epoxy would seal each piece, improving the entire boat's longevity.

Next, it was time to begin stitching each of the boat pieces together.

In order to make the process simpler, father and son attached a temporary frame to the boat's base. This would help hold each piece in place during the stitching process.

One by one, father and son threaded pieces of copper wiring through tiny holes all over the boat.

Eventually, the boat began taking shape.

After completing all of the stitching, this DIY duo applied an epoxy and additive glue to each of the boat's seams.

Once that dried, they were able to remove all of the copper wiring.

They then covered each seam with another adhesive layer of fiberglass cloth and more epoxy.

With the boat's structure in place, it was time to reinforce with a full outer coating of fiberglass for added durability.

Neither father nor son had ever worked with fiberglass in this application before, so this became quite the learning process.

These DIY-ers brought the boat back to their house, flipped it over, and began learning as they went.

After the fiberglass was in place, they sanded it down for a smooth finish.

By 2011, these DIY-ers were sure they were nearly finished building the boat of their dreams.

Little did they know, life had made other plans…

This DIY-er graduated from high school and headed off to college.

Around that same time, his parents picked up and moved to an entirely different state.

Amid all this change, their project understandably sat on hold.

However, finishing this dream boat never entirely escaped either of their minds.

In 2014, they picked the project back up again, this time with new drive.

This round, an additional brother joined in on the fun, too, lending two more helping hands.

Eventually, they installed all the boat's framing and decking.

This DIY team chose to use gorgeous African mahogany. Each piece needed to be positioned and glued individually, resulting in several weeks of work.

Once they finished all this piece-by-piece work, the sanding began, which of course was another time-consuming adventure.

Eventually, they applied a beautiful varnish, giving the boat a gorgeous, classic feel.

After weeks of electrical engineering, they secured the boat's hood and tiller in place.

For added control over the boat's speed, they added a control panel.

In time, they anticipate replacing this panel with a more advanced version.

Finalized with name and registration, the Current is a beauty.

Now, this family has their own handmade boat, resting soundly at their dock on the Erie Canal.

This vessel is bound to remain in their family for generations to come.
