Soon the kids will be out of school for the summer, you’ll have vacation on the brain, and the sun will be blasting, which means it’s time to take a trip. But yikes — you forgot one thing: Who will look after the family dog?
Before contacting the doggy sitters, don’t fret; your dog can join in on the summer fun too, so long as you plan ahead. While it may seem like most resorts and vacation hot spots are for humans only, there are way more dog-friendly places than you’d expect. This is particularly true in the US, maybe even in your very own state.
So where can you and your dog spend the summer?
Bar Harbor, Maine
Known for the juiciest, freshest lobster in the country, Bar Harbor is a stunning vacation destination, and it's very dog-friendly. It’s the place to go for foodies as well as hikers and sailing enthusiasts. In fact, your pup can join you on many of these adventures, such as the Sea Princess Scenic Nature Cruises and Side Street Café. There are also tons of dog-friendly accommodations in Bar Harbor, from affordable motels like the Belle Isle Motel to more luxurious vacation homes such as the Modern House Family Retreat.
From open areas where your pet can run around as much as they like to lodging that is pet-safe and as comfortable as a summer breeze, Bar Harbor is also located near one of the most dog-friendly parks in the country, Acadia National Park. The park has over 100 miles of hiking trails, perfect for active families and energetic pups. Jordan Pond Path, Cadillac North Ridge Trail, Gorham Mountain Loop — the list is almost endless. So long as you keep your dog on leash, there's plenty to do, without the stress of crowds or city noises.
Austin, Texas
If you’re not really a hiker but still want to keep active, then Austin is home to a unique yoga class that may catch your eye as a dog parent. Austin Doga is a yoga session where you can bring your dog and practice mindfulness, as a beginner or a pro. If you're worried about whether yoga is safe for a dog, have no fear. Your dog doesn't actually do any yoga, since apart from Downward Facing Dog, very few yoga poses work with a dog’s body structure. Your dog is there simply for support, cuddles, and relaxation.
After your pup has had a relaxing break, hop on over to Red Bud Isle for some off-leash fun. Dogs are free to swim in the lake, though unfortunately you cannot. However, if you’re up for some post-yoga water time, head down to the Barton Creek Greenbelt Preserve for swimming for the whole family. Check out the nearby Barton Creek Farmers Market while you’re there for scrumptious snacks, a bounce house for the kids, dog food and accessories, and more.
Kanab, Utah
For a smaller and less-well-known vacation spot, Kanab is a small town in Southwestern Utah, well known for the Best Friends Animal Society. OK, so it's home to a charity, which is cool, but how does it tie in to your vacation? The Best Friends Sanctuary is almost its own vacation resort, offering various lodging options, eateries, activities, and tours.
The Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile has 40 guest rooms, perfect for both pets and people, with options from standard rooms to accessible king and queen suites, plus two included lunches from the Angel Village Café. You can even host a sleepover in your hotel room with one of the cats, dogs, or bunnies at the sanctuary. Not only can you secure a cuddle buddy during your stay, but if you're up for giving a helping hand, you can also volunteer your time by feeding the animals, walking them, and more. If you want to explore Kanab, there are also tons of dog-friendly hot spots to visit, or if you want a little non-doggy-parent time, the Best Friends Sanctuary also offers pet-sitting and walking services.
Emerald Isle, North Carolina
You didn’t think we’d get through this list without a beach, right? And for coffee lovers, this one’s for you. As a coastal town, Emerald Isle is known for its vast marine life. If your kids are budding marine biologists, you can spot nesting sea turtles, seals, dolphins, and even whales all over the isle. Like most beaches, Emerald Isle Beach requires dogs to stay on leashes; however, they can frolic in the sand and water to their heart's content.
Soak in the sun for a while, then head on over to Muttigans K9s and Coffee. Formally Salty Dogs Pet Boutique, Muttigans is the perfect blend of coffee and pet accessories. With pet food, toys, coffees, frappés, dog treats, teas, and, of course, pup cups, you and your dog can relax with some delicious refreshments. They also offer nutritional counseling for dog parents, as well as food delivery. Both you and your dog deserve a nice vacation, whether you’re spending a day at the beach, hiking, or treasure hunting for the best cafés in the area.
