Cicadas are known for their distinctive sound; whenever you hear thousands of them droning together, you just know that summer has finally arrived.
While the plump insects are large and annoying, they're actually pretty harmless for the most part. They're not poisonous, nor do they sting; but unfortunately, these seasonal bugs might be quite dangerous to your beloved pet dog.
Even though "man's best friend" is known for their high intelligence, sometimes there are a few things that dogs just can't seem to get enough of. Even though you may try your best to train them not to eat these bugs, if they get the chance, they'll swallow as many as they can.
It seems that dogs just love the crunchy taste of these big bugs, and while they aren't deadly, if your dog over-indulges on this seasonal treat, they'll be feeling pretty terrible later on. Causing painful stomachaches, loss of appetite, and even bloody stools, these bugs can cause quite the disturbance in your poor dog's life.
You won't be able to stop your dog from eating everything, so it is best to keep a closer eye on them during the summer for this exact reason. If you have lots of trees in your backyard, you're probably well aware of how many cicadas are hanging around your neighborhood — but even if you don't, there might be large groupings of these insects hidden in the bushes.
Try to guide your dog away from any swarms, and if you think your dog is suffering from eating too many Cicadas, keep them well hydrated and use anti-diarrheal medications to soothe their sick stomachs.
Keep your pets safe this summer!
