Guests at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston, MA are probably familiar with the hotel’s canine ambassadors: two black Labradors named Catie and Carly Copley.
But longtime doorman Michael Eades noticed one guest in particular, Brandon Leach, getting extra close to the dogs.
The 12-year-old has lived at the hotel for months while being treated at a local hospital for mitochondrial disease, a disease which prevents the body's cells from working properly.
Leach seemed to suffer less when the dog was around. In turn, Eades decided to get him a black Lab of his own with the help of some other employees and guests.
Black Labs make great therapy and service dogs, which have proven to have countless benefits for people in need. Just look at the way one pooch helps seniors with dementia and Alzheimer’s and another aids a lady with Asperger’s.
"In Brandon's case, for Mitochondrial Disease, black Labs can be trained to recognize choking symptoms," Eades said. "He will be trained for that."
When Leach received the dog (as shown at the :43 mark), he was in disbelief. The puppy has already made such a difference in his life.
“Brandon is so much better," his mom said. "It’s the happiest he’s been and it seems the best he has felt."
