If you saw Doree, the 160-lb. Saint Bernard, you might mistake her for a giant teddy bear. Doree is pretty laid-back dog, but when her family needs her, she's not afraid to shift gears and become the protector.
On one strange night, Doree began pacing around. She whined. She behaved erratically and unusually. She would not let her family, the Damrills, get to sleep.
“Probably about 2 o’clock in the morning Doree started whining, or had been whining, for a little while," her human Jack Damrill said. "Kind of pacing around the bed.”
It was then that Jack noticed the smell of gas. He went to investigate and saw that the burner of the stove had been left on, though the dial was set so low that it wasn't clearly visible. The home had filled with gas.
Jack called 911 and realized that, had it not been for Doree, his entire family and home could have been lost in an instant. The scenario is all too familiar: a doggy named Duke saved his family's newborn when she quit breathing in her sleep.
Some see caring for an animal as a hassle, I see it as a friendship and a safety net.
“The firefighters were talking and they said, ‘Well, the worst-case scenario is your house could have been ended up in match boxes across the street.' Which means it would have blown up," Damrill said.
The Damrills are certain it was their beloved pets that saved their lives that night.
“We’re very faithful people. We believe in Christ and we believe He does a lot in our life and we believe He acted to save our life last night by allowing this dog to use its sense of smell to alert us to what could have been a tragedy in this house blowing up,” Jack said.
