A homeless dog has been given the perfect nickname, "el Afortunado", AKA "The Lucky One", after he miraculously survived a natural disaster with all odds against him.
A terrible mudslide in Guatemala that killed six people was not going to take one steadfast stray as another victim. A team of rescuers were sent to Joya Grande village to dig for survivors, when they heard barking and rushed over to find the dog buried underneath the hardened mud. It was an absolute miracle that the dog survived 18 hours being trapped underground after such a traumatizing tragedy.
Rescuer Jose Guerdola told reporters “When we broke through to where he was he jumped into our arms and licked our faces. Unfortunately there was no one left alive in the rubble with him but we took him to safety.” When the dog was brought to a local vet, he was treated for dehydration and shock, but besides that he was completely healthy. To top off this stray's happy ending, he was placed in a local shelter where he was quickly adopted by a loving family.
