In 2013, Joni and Luke Timm anxiously waited for their FedEx package to arrive. You see, this was no ordinary delivery… because inside the box were frozen embryos.
It all started when Luke, who is a pastor, received a prayer request for a couple who adopted an embryo. Curious as to what this meant, Luke learned about embryo adoption, which gives leftover embryos donated after IVF treatment a chance at life. The Timms adopted embryos from a couple in Alaska, signed the paperwork, and waited for their potential "future kids" to arrive. Since only a fraction of these embryos survive, Joni implanted two of them.
During her first ultrasound, the hopeful couple heard one heartbeat, then two. And then came the shocking news.
Both embryos took… and one split. Joni was pregnant with triplets!
"They found out they had triplets, they didn't change their plan. It didn't deter them any. They kept moving forward knowing there was some risk involved," says Dr. Neil Mandsager at Perinatal Center of Iowa.
Ezekiel, Malachi and Evangeline were delivered via C-section at 34 weeks. Joni, Luke and their three biological children call the triplets an absolute blessing.
