Directed by none other than master puppeteer Frank Oz and filled with an incredible cast including Steve Martin, Ellen Greene, Jim Belushi, Bill Murray, John Candy, and Rick Moranis, Little Shop of Horrors is an undeniable cult classic to millions of fans.
Though it didn't achieve wide success at the box office, this musical found later gains in VHS sales. Many have argued that the reason this film did so poorly when it opened was because the original ending had to be cut, thus pushing the release date back. Test audiences apparently did not respond well to this darker ending.
The original, darker ending is based off of the Broadway musical version, and it's a lot crazier than the redone climax of the film version.
In this ending, versions of Audrey II are shown being bought by thousands of people. These new versions of Audrey II grow into huge behemoths and start destroying cities around the world, eating cars and people and destroying buildings. Eventually the Army comes in, but even they cannot hold back attacks from the "Mean Green Mothers from Outer Space."
Eventually Audrey II clones climb the Statue of Liberty as the Army helplessly realizes they have no ability to fight the beasts. Audrey II roars in triumph, "The End?!?!" appears on the screen, and it finally ends with Audrey II breaking through the fourth wall, tearing through the screen to eat the audience!
Definitely a pretty crazy ending, and this version will certainly make you look at this movie completely differently!
