Dispatchers, especially 911 dispatchers, are trained in various forms of emergency response. Although 911 calls can be pretty scary, if it's the first day on the job, you might not expect anything particularly crazy or difficult to come your way.
Right?
Well, that's exactly what 911 Dispatcher Jenna Mapes had to deal with.
On her very first day on the job, she received a call of a very high emergency — a baby was being born!
The call came from the Ascheman household, where mom-to-be Deborah started going into labor. She and her husband Ryan realized they were not going to make it to the hospital, so Ryan called 911, where he spoke to Jenna.
“At first I thought, 'Oh, this is not happening,'" Deborah recalled of the event.
Luckily, the Aschemans also had a doula present, and while Ryan informed Jenna of the situation, Jenna then relayed to the doula what needed to be done.
It took all of eight minutes for baby Benjamin to be born once the call was initially made.
Amazingly, neither Deborah nor Ryan knew that it was Jenna's first day on the job, as she advised them in a composed and efficient manner.
"I wanted to help people. I wanted to be able to do things like this," Jenna said.
After Benjamin was born, fire and rescue crews showed up to further assist with the birth.
