Football Player Loses His Dad, But Then He Becomes Support System For Fellow Grieving Teammate

The Fall 2015 football season for the Medfield Warriors was a tough one after senior Bryan Carrabis lost his father, Billy, to cancer.

As soon as word spread to his teammates, they all came over to his house just to hang out and make sure he was okay.

Then a week later, he did the same thing for his fellow senior, John Williams, who also lost his dad to cancer just a few weeks after being diagnosed.

When John’s father passed away, Bryan personally took it upon himself to pass on the news to his teammates and be there for John and his family. He also helped John deal with his emotions when he came to Bryan asking how to get through it.

“I said, ‘Just be strong, know that everyone loves you and everyone’s got your back no matter what,’” Bryan told The Boston Globe. “Hopefully we can have each other’s backs and talk through it. That’s what we’ve been doing.”

With two teammates going through the same thing, the team bonded together to support their brothers and their families through this incredibly difficult time. And after such an emotional experience, their wins and losses didn’t seem to matter as much as their relationships with each other did.

“The best of Medfield comes out in the worst of times,” Medfield High School coach Erik Ormberg told The Boston Globe. “That just shows you what this town is all about. These kids and this program are an extension of that."

Both Bryan and John have graduated and moved on to college, but the memories they have of their last football season will stick with them forever.

“Once it goes away, it goes away,” Bryan said. “It’s just like when dad passed away. You’re going to lose it, but the memories, they never go away.”
