Susan Gower and her husband stopped at a Florida gas station. He filled up the car with $20 worth of gas, using their credit card to pay for it. However, the next day, when Gower went to use the card, it said it was over the credit limit.
Gower checked her account and saw a charge of $9,949.36 from the gas station. The receipt indicated she was charged for over 27,000 gallons of gas.
The elementary school teacher immediately tried to cancel her card but the bank told her to take it up with the gas station.
"The bank just said, 'Get with Valero, have them reverse the charges.' Very simple," Gower recalled to WFTX-TV.
While the gas station manager completely dismissed her, when she called Valero's customer service, they immediately credited her money back. The company handled things perfectly, it was the manager that had a chip on his shoulder it seemed.
"It stemmed from the glitch in his gas pump. He just wouldn't ever own up to the fact that he was wrong," Gower said.
Unfortunately, while her card was frozen, Gower was unable to use her Visa reward points as planned to rent two cars. She was forced to pay out of pocket. She hoped the gas station owner would refund her that money but he refused to listen to her. When a WFTX reporter called, he hung up on her.
"I'm a teacher, and 10-year-olds know they need to own up to their mistakes, and try to make it right and apologize. That's what makes me mad," she says.
