Aaron Bleyaert from LeClaire, Iowa, was asleep when a problem with the house's electricity caused a horrific fire. The 14-year-old awoke and saw that he was sleeping on a burning bed.
"I'd gotten up, I looked back. The side of my bed was on fire," Aaron said.
Aaron knows that he is incredibly lucky. He was able to implement fire-prevention skills he learned in school, which helped him safely escape the blazing home.
When the teen smelled smoke, he knew to grab a T-shirt to shield his face, then run out of the back door. Aaron knew from his training that the front door was trickier to open and would be locked.
The teen narrowly escaped. Luckily, a stranger appeared out of nowhere: a woman he didn't know saw what had happened, showed up to help him, and immediately called the police.
"She saved the house in a way," Aaron said. "If she wouldn't have called, then I don't know what would have happened."
The family says they learned a lesson from the fire.
"Strike up a conversation with your neighbor. Get to know them," said Sondra Sierens, Aaron's mom. "I would have loved to know these people that came and helped my family. Going forward, that's what we have to do."
