Police officers are trained to protect and serve, but many times they go above and beyond to show how much they care.
In December of 2016, 8-year-old Harmonie McKiver and her grandpa, George Meiklejohn, suffered a horrible tragedy.
"I found my wife dead in the bathroom and my granddaughter was with me,” George said.
The authorities were instantly contacted, and soon, members of the Anne Arundel County Police Department in Edgewater, Maryland, arrived on the scene. As some officers investigated and tried to revive her grandma, others took Harmonie upstairs to her room, away from the sad scene below. There, they got to know the enthusiastic little girl.
"She brought me into this bedroom, which was her uncle’s bedroom, which had holes in the wall. It wasn't decorated and she said, ‘My pop-pop is going to make it nice for me so I can live here,'” Sgt. Dianne Venit said.
At that moment, Sgt. Venit, a mom herself, decided to help. With the help of her fellow officers, they collected substantial donations from a family in nearby Davidsonville and got to work giving Harmonie's room a complete makeover.
They repainted the whole room, redecorated it with all the things Harmonie loved, and filled it with new toys.
"I really do think they are the nicest officers in the whole wide world," Harmonie said.
Her grandpa recorded her stunned and ecstatic reaction upon seeing her new room, thanks to the men and women in uniform.
