Great-Grandma Is Surprised With Official High School Diploma!

Dorothy Louise had one huge regret in her life. She regretted it so much that she hammered it into the heads of her five children to never make the same mistake she did. She clearly hammered a few other things into her sweet children, who decided to undo the wrong that caused their mother so much heartache. In 1942, with just two weeks of school left, Dorothy got a little sassy. When a gym teacher reprimanded her, she revealed that she was secretly married to her high school sweetheart. In those times, marriage was cause for expulsion. Dorothy never got her high school diploma.

“She always felt that by not getting her high school diploma, she had not done what she should have,” her daughter Janice told WKBN. “I feel responsible because she was pregnant with me when she was expelled.”

On Dorothy's 93rd birthday, Janice decided to call up the superintendent of Akron Public Schools, David W. James. David agreed that what happened was an injustice of the times. So on Dorothy's birthday, her children told her they were taking her for a walk. As they headed outside, Dorothy was ambushed by the superintendent, who arrived with her high school diploma, old high school report cards, and of course, her graduation cap. She was brought to tears.

“I always felt bad not having this,” Dorothy said. “Even though I’m 93 years old, I still like having it.”
