Tragic Loss Fuels One Girl’s Desire To Help Kids Just Like Her

It’s always awesome to see kids with big dreams and ambitions for the future.

Of course, it’s even more impressive when you see little ones already out in the world, making a huge difference for their community.

I know plenty of adults who don’t have that much civic commitment, much less the chutzpah to do something like ambitiously set out to save all the bees and make a million dollars in the process, for example.

It can’t be denied, when kids have a bright idea, they tend to stick to it with power and creativity that leaves us grown-ups awestruck. It’s truly something to behold!

And a little girl named Sophia who lives in the Denver area is no exception to the rule.

The bright young spark isn’t yet 10, but her capacity for kindness belies her youth. Nowhere is that kindness more evident than in her personal not-for-profit, called Heaven Sent It.

What do you think of her incredible organization, and her kind heart? Let us know in the comments below!

Little Sophia's story started with an early tragedy.

Her father, Nicolas, died in a workplace accident when she was just 5 years old. She was heartbroken by the loss — but decided, even at such a young age, to do whatever she could to honor her father's legacy.

She writes on her website: "He was my hero and my best friend. When he died I thought my world was over and I would never be happy again… I have learned to cope with my grief and my sadness by working hard to keep my dad’s memory alive."

With her father in mind, Sophia and her mom Courtney decided to launch an effort to help other kids experiencing tragedy.

With Nicolas looming large in their minds, they created Heaven Sent It, a project designed to offer comfort to other children dealing with the loss of a parent.

This image of Nicolas, decked with inspirational sayings, is a lovely encapsulation of what the project is all about: making a difference, no matter how big or small.

In Sophia's case, the difference she makes is pretty big.

In honor of her father and with the unique understanding that comes from losing a parent so young, Sophia spends her free time writing letters to other kids who have experienced loss.

She counsels them, kid-to-kid, on how to manage and understand grief when it feels like nothing will ever make sense again.

She also lovingly crafts care packages to go along with her letters, full of things like notebooks for writing down memories, and picture frames to hold photos of parents lost too soon.

She makes sure that the kids she reaches out to know that someone is thinking of them.

Her packages have already reached lots of little ones coping with loss, like the little girl pictured above. Now, Sophia's mission is to reach even more kids, as many as possible.

Her mom Courtney told LittleThings: "In the coming months, Sophia will be reaching out to children who have lost a parent (we have 100s)… In Sophia's eyes — the sky is the limit — she hopes to start a scholarship fund that will allow her to send grieving children to summer camps across the country."

Courtney also adds that Sophia runs an after-school club called Heaven's Helpers, who also participate in the project.

Since the project was officially incorporated as a not-for-profit earlier this month, Heaven Sent It is growing quickly and reaching more kids than ever.

Sophia plans to further buoy her efforts by putting together a children's book about heaven and what happens when a parent passes on, and including it in her packages.

Already, she's become a pillar of her community, working with the nearby Silverthorne police and fire departments to collect toys for the kids on her list at Christmastime, and working with her school to get more kids involved with the project.

If you ask us, it seems pretty clear that Sophia is destined for greatness, and that Heaven Sent It will only get bigger and better!

If you agree, consider sponsoring a package on her website, and don't forget to SHARE to support this remarkable young lady and her incredible mission!
