In 2013, a Utah woman — pregnant with twins — went into delivery. The only problem? She was about an hour away from the nearest hospital. The events that followed are like something out of an action movie.
Lynette Hales was only 30 weeks pregnant when she started having contractions. At the time, she was with a family friend, who got Hales into the van and sped away towards the hospital. Once Jim got 911 on the phone, however, the dispatcher ordered him to pull off to the side of the road. Just then, Hales felt the first baby coming out.
When Jim looked over at Hales, he saw the baby was already born. However, he was still inside his amniotic sac, a rare occurrence also known as an "en caul" delivery. Knowing she had to think fast in order to save her baby's life, Hales broke the water bag with her own fingernail — but the baby was blue, and he wasn't breathing. She kept talking to the twin A, named JJ, hoping her voice would keep him alive.
At this point troopers were well on their way, but even they knew time was running out. They feared one or both babies would be dead by the time they got there, or that Hales herself wouldn't make it.
