The Evolution Of The Bra Will Make You Thankful For The Modern Era

Despite the nagging of your mother's best intentions about your hemline, there's no disputing the fact that the times have certainly changed since she was a girl.

But she's not the only one.

Beauty trends have shifted consistently with the ebbs and flows of whatever is en vogue. Tracing makeup trends alone offers enough evidence of the ghosts of fashions past. But lest you forget that there's a significant difference between the favored styles of you and your grandmother, take a moment to examine the way your underwire has evolved through the ages, courtesy of Glamour Magazine.

Now, while some of these styles certainly leave us yearning for a comfier time — the Symington from the 1920s is one I wished stocked my dresser drawers with in excess — styles like the "nipple bra" from the '70s remind us why not everything can remain in style forever (and thank goodness).

It's also interesting to see how specific styles (e.g. the corset) have woven their way back into the pop culture circuit and withstood the test of time. And Glamour has a pretty good sense of humor about the style of our shape-wear in the future, too.
