Sheriffs Share Photo Online After Escorting New Mom And Baby From Hospital During Hurricane Irma

The recent bout of hurricanes has wreaked an unbelievable amount of devastation in several areas of the USA, as well as all across the Caribbean.

Property has been destroyed and lives have sadly been lost. Additionally, families were forced to leave behind beloved pets due to a lack of animal-friendly shelters.

Throughout it all, people have been banding together to do incredible things. Complete strangers have joined forces to help those in need, and celebrities like Kristen Bell and Miranda Lambert, have stepped up to assist Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma victims, both big and small. The best of humanity has been on display throughout these recent natural disasters.

Of course, local authorities and US Armed Forces have been doing their parts to help with hurricane rescue and cleanup, to keep as many people and animals as safe as possible. When Irma hit Florida, the police were busy responding to calls — but still made time to help out a new mom.

Cara and her husband, Jeff, live in Key West, Florida, which was expected to be hit badly by the huge tropical storm, once it made landfall.

Instead of waiting it out, they decided to evacuate their home, along with the millions of other Floridians who opted to do the same. They fled to the Miami area.

Cara and Jeff's baby girl was born just hours before the category 3 storm's life-threatening winds and flooding were expected to hit, according to PEOPLE.

As Cara explained to to BBC News, the couple fled the Keys on September 5, 2017. They'd had a scheduled doctor's appointment the next day (Cara's due date) to check on the status of the baby.

An hour after leaving the doctor, Cara started to go into labor.

Obviously, that put a stop to any attempt for the couple to travel.

The next night, Cara gave birth to her baby girl. They named her Nayiri Storm Kesling.

According to family member Susan Kesling Roger's Facebook post, Nayiri is an Armenian name.

Storm, of course, is a reference to the unique weather circumstances under which the baby girl entered the world.

At the time, Cara and Nayiri were expected to remain in the hospital until Irma had passed Dade County.

Instead, the Miami-Dade Police Department stepped in. Cara explained that when they were discharged from the hospital, sheriffs outside offered to escort them safely to their hotel.

"Welcome to the world baby Nayiri Storm! Glad our officers were able to assist the family safely from hospital to hotel. #PerfectName," the department tweeted, along with a photo of an officer helping mom and baby safely into their transportation.

As of September 9, 2017, Cara, Jeff, and Nayiri were intending to wait out the storm in the hotel until they get word that it is safe to return to their Key West home.
