When Peni, a young female orangutan, and her mother wandered too close to a village in Indonesia while looking for food, they were captured and tortured by the villagers. Peni’s mother died from the abuse, and Peni suffered massive trauma, too. Her torture would have continued and she would have died, too, if she had not been found by the International Animal Rescue.
After three years of rehabilitation, she was finally carried deep into the wild and released to live the way she was meant to. I couldn’t help but tear up a little when I saw her immediately climbing a tree once released.
