In the opening seconds of this video I have to admit I had no idea what was going on. The clip starts with a beautiful view of an Arctic landscape, it seems like the ice shelf just goes on forever and ever.
Suddenly, about 10 seconds in, a tiny bump starts to form in the center of the image. The bump quickly turns into a mound, then a hill, then a huge mountain! In less than 15 seconds, the clip shifts from a calm view of the Arctic landscape to an incredible image of what the full might of the United States Navy has to offer!
Thankfully, as this behemoth bursts through the ice, no Polar Bears or Penguins were in the way! Hopefully accidents like that don't often happen to our furry and feathery friends.
YouTube user Jim Davidson says that the camera was filming from Ice Camp Opal, one of three research stations established on the polar ice cap to study oceanography and submarine warfare.
It's incredible to believe that there are devices capable of ripping through six feet of solid ice, but just leave it to the Americans to come up with something as powerful — and awesome — as that!
