102-Year-Old Mother Finally Gets Son’s Burial Flag 4 Years After His Death

Ever since her son died, Jeannette Pechuman has only wanted one thing: his burial flag. Four years later, the 102-year-old’s wish finally came true.

Sgt. First Class Dennis Becker of the Minnesota National Guard presented Pechuman with the flag on June 5 at the Southview Acres Care center.

The heartwarming moment was caught on camera and the proud mother is seen clinging on to the flag while wiping tears from her eyes.

“I was dumbfounded when the major came and handed the flag to me,” Pechuman told Minnesota’s Fox affiliate.

Bryan James Pechuman, an Army veteran, died on Nov. 14, 2011 after battling three types of cancer. He was 63.

“It was hard time for both my mom and I to have him living with us with his cancer,” said Gayle Anderson, the veteran’s sister. “And he tried so hard to stay alive.”

Heartbroken by the death, his mother hoped to one day hold her son's flag, which symbolizes and honors his service in Korea from 1970–1974. Thanks to West St. Paul VFW Post 4462 in Minnesota, Pechuman was finally able to do so.

“I had been crying ever since, and I'm Norwegian, so if I've been crying, you know I've been crying,” she said.
