A mere week before 27-year-old Quinn Duane of Sacramento, CA, was to get married, the groom got cold feet and called it off, leaving her with a $35,000 bill for a ceremony that was never going to happen.
The Duane family wasn't sure what to do — the bride didn't exactly feel like celebrating, so they paid it forward instead. Duane called a local homeless shelter, Next Move, which helps hundreds of women and families.
It wasn't in the stars for Duane's big day, but instead she chose to provide dozens with a four-star meal at a luxury hotel.
“It was my parent’s idea. I was pretty emotional, but as soon as they asked me if I’d be OK with that, I was like, ‘Oh, absolutely!’” she told KCRA.
Duane didn't attend the lavish dinner. Instead, she went on her nonrefundable honeymoon with her mom in Belize.
“It was just good to spend time with my mom. We had a really good time,” she said. “Belize is beautiful, absolutely beautiful. I love to travel; it was a passion of mine, so we had a really good time.”
So many people were stunned with Duane's act of kindness, but she believes it was just a way of turning a bad thing into a good thing.
“Doing something positive, it doesn’t need to be overcomplicated,” Duane said. “Mine came out of a bad situation. But regardless, it’s important to pay it forward and do positive things in the world — put positive energy out there.”
Life has a way of testing us when we least expect it, but if we can turn our obstacles into a way to help others, then together we can change the world.
