In a recent interview with Esquire, John Mellencamp, 71, opened up about his relationship with Meg Ryan, 61, which ended in 2019.
"I love Meg Ryan," the musician told Esquire. "I went with her for 10 years. She doesn’t love me so much. She’s a great girl. I’m just a [expletive] boyfriend."
The couple was previously engaged but called the engagement off, with a source telling People that John wasn't interested in getting married again.
The couple had previously split up then gotten back together.
Before they started seeing each other again, John told Howard Stern that Meg — and women in general — hated him because he was immature and "every bad thing that a fella can be."
John's recent interview with Esquire suggests he still thinks of himself that way.
He also talked about how they were both "lost" when they first started dating. However, he noted that Meg seemed to learn, while he did not.
"Meg Ryan had just come out of her shell; I had just come out of my shell. We started dating. And we decided to do things on our own instead of having people do stuff for us. We were so [expletive] lost. We didn’t know how to do anything," he told Esquire.

"I’ve never checked out of a hotel by myself. Her and I went to a grocery store, and they wanted our credit card, and we looked at each other and said, 'Here it is,' and they said, 'No, you’ve got to put it in this thing,' and we went, 'Then what happens?'" he continued. "We laughed at how stupid we are, so hard we cried. I think she’s learned how to do everything, and I’ve learned how to do nothing."
John also told Esquire that his goal is to live to be 80, and he expects the time to go by quickly.
"I’ve got only 10 summers left. Ten summers is not that long," he said.
