To paraphrase a wonderful sentiment from Pixar's Ratatouille, not everyone can be an artist, but an artist can come from anywhere. And it turns out that art can even be created by, uh, an elephant?
Judy the elephant is like most elephants you'd come across. She lives in California with other elephants, hangs out with zookeepers and, oh, she occasionally likes to paint abstract pictures on easels.
"One of the reasons that we do it is just that it's something different for the animals to do," Judy's zookeeper explains. "They are very intelligent animals. We want to keep their mind busy."
In the video below, you can catch Judy's whole studio setup. Zookeepers will bring her paintbrushes, colorful paint, an easel, and fresh paper, so Judy has the best environment to be creative.
And it turns out Judy is a regular Picasso!
When the zookeeper hands her a paintbrush, Judy knows exactly what to do! And once she puts it to paper, even art critics can't deny her work.
"It's art," a professor and critic at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco says, defending Judy's abstract work. "And it's visually very pleasing."
Even better than Judy's natural talent is the happiness it brings her. "Judy likes attention and she gets attention for doing this, so it makes her happy," Judy's zookeeper says with a smile.
We'll keep giving you all the attention you want, Judy! Just keep on painting!
